With a chance to finish third in the World Cup Qualifiers 2022, updates on the Indian football team are below!
India started their journey in the World Cup 2022 qualifiers with a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of Oman.
This home defeat was then followed by a historic goalless draw against Asian champions Qatar in Doha.
In their third and fourth matches, the Blue Tigers managed 1-1 draws against Bangladesh and Afghanistan respectively.
However, they suffered a narrow defeat once more, this time away from home against Oman. They lost 1-0 to Oman in their fifth match.
Now, the national Indian football team will resume their qualifying campaign with three matches pending. The first is against Qatar on June 3.
They will then play Bangladesh on June 7 and finally Afghanistan, in their last qualifying game on June 15.
While India does not stand a chance of qualifying for the next round of the World Cup qualifiers, they still have a lot to play for in these remaining three fixtures.
India may get to finish at least in the third position in their qualifiers’ group. In this case, they will directly qualify for the third round of the Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers.
World Cup Qualifiers 2022: Updates on the Indian Football Team
How can India finish third, you may ask? Well, in answer to that, first refer to this table:
|Position||Team||Played||Won||Drawn||Lost||Goals Scored||Goals Against||GD||Points|
Now, as is clear, Qatar and Oman have an unassailable lead at the top two spots.
The remaining three teams of Afghanistan, India, and Bangladesh are fighting for third place.
Though useless in these qualifiers, the third spot does ensure direct entry in the Asian Cup Qualification 2023, third round.
Winning all their games will give India the third place, because that would involve beating Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
Still, by winning just two matches, India may surpass the other two teams because of a higher goal difference.
But this also requires that Afghanistan, currently ahead of India, lose one of their three remaining fixtures. Bangladesh are out of the running for the third spot anyway.
