Sampdoria Reports Four Positive Cases for COVID-19, All Players

Four Sampdoria footballers are positive for coronavirus, and one of them for the second time, the Italian club announced on Thursday.

On Thursday, the Italian government announced that it was still considering health instructions for clubs of the Italian Football Federation, which desperately wants the season to continue.

Clubs are allowed to start training sessions this week where players train individually and follow social distancing protocols.

As reported by the Italian media, Sampdoria has a lot to cope with, with four players turning out to be positive right before training officially resumes. “They are currently asymptomatic and they are in quarantine and they will be monitored according to protocol,” the club’s website said.

Italian football leaders have discussed with medical experts a possible return to team training on May 18, and a decision will be made over the next week. The Italian Championship was suspended on March 9, with 12 rounds left by the end of the season. The possible date for the resumption of the championship is not yet known.

In March, five Sampdoria players – Manolo Gabbiadini, Morten Thorsby, Albin Ekdal, Omar Colley and Antonino La Gumina – as well as club doctor Amedeo Baldari, tested positive for coronavirus.

In Italy, more than 215,000 people became infected while over 29,000 people died.

A day ago, Fiorentina announced that three of its players and three staff members were infected, and the day before that, Torino announced that one of its players was also positive for coronavirus.
