Netflix to Produce Documentary on National U.S. Women’s Team’s Winning World Cup

Netflix confirmed it would produce a documentary film about the U.S. women’s national team that won the World Cup on home field in 1999.

The entertainment company recently purchased the rights to the book by Jere Longman, “The Girls of Summer: The US Women’s Soccer Team and how it Changed the World.”

The project will be directed by Liza Chasin (Darkest Hour, Baby Driver, Love Actually), along with Hayley Stool and Ross Greenburg.

What’s more, President and CEO of the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup Marla Messing, Jill Mazursky and Krista Smith, will serve as executive producers.

The Women’s World Cup of 1999 is considered as a ground-breaking time in women’s game culture.

The game culminated with the final at the Rose Bowl in Southern California, with the United States emerging successful after 120 scoreless minutes in a penalty shootout against China.

USWNT goalkeeper Brandi Chastain ripped off her jersey after hitting the World Cup-winning penalty and created an instantly unforgettable moment.
