Marcel Schäfer will be appointed as managing director of sport at VfL Wolfsburg on February 1, 2023. As a result, Jörg Schmadtke, whose contract is expected to expire on January 31, 2023, will be replaced by the current sports director. Sebastian Schindzielorz, a former VfL player, will assume the position of sports director in February 2019.
After ten years, the former left-back left VfL in March 2017 for the USA, where he joined the Tampa Bay Rowdies almost a year and a half later, ending his career prematurely to return. The former left-back played a total of 314 competitive games for VfL. And won the championship and the DFB Cup with the Wolves.
“He represented the values of VfL while still on the field, and he has successfully performed his duties as the sports director since 2018,” said Frank Witter, chairman of the board, explaining the decision of the supervisory board.
“That people trust me and my work makes me incredibly happy. With great enthusiasm and emotion, I shall take on the big challenge of stepping into Jörg Schmadtke’s footsteps. I’ve been working closely with Jörg for more than four years. And I’m really appreciative of the chance he gave me to study, work on my own. And advance every day,” adds Marcel Schäfer.
