Matchday 1

After everything Shakhtar and their nation has gone through little was expected of them. The hosts on the other hand needed a strong performance, following their weekend loss.

The away side opened the scoring in the 15th minute. The rest of the first half was rather uneventful, with both teams playing cautiously.

However, the second half saw a ton of goals. Simakan equalised for the Red Bulls in the 57th minute. This was quickly responded by Shved who almost scored from kickoff. This was followed by goals from Mudryk and Traoré. Thus sealing a 4-1 win for the Moles.

Leipzig vs Shakhtar Donetsk: Post match reactions

Igor Jovićević, Shakhtar coach: “When the counter attack for the third goal came and the ball was at Mudryk’s feet, I already raised my arms in celebration because I know from training that he scores when he is through one on one with the keeper. I tried to give this positive energy and it’s all about being positive.”

Konrad Laimer, Leipzig midfielder: “We lost 4-1 so it was not a good match. We dominated but we had some sloppy final passes and conceded bad goals. You cannot win like this in the Bundesliga and the Champions League. In the opening phase I was sure we would win. We had a lot of the ball, we had chances but now we have zero points. We really needed that win.”
