La Liga Teams Are Allowed to Train in May

The Spanish Government has set new dates for vocational training to be revived as part of a four-stage program to emerge from the lockdown. La Liga players will be allowed to use the facility on an individual basis as of May 4, with group sessions as of May 11.

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe has announced that no sporting activities, even those behind closed doors, will be permitted before September, spitting expectations of the end of the 2019-20 campaign.

The country’s top two divisions will follow the example of the Dutch Eredivisie and end their seasons early due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ligue 1 became the second major European league to be cancelled after a political interference on Tuesday, but Spain’s La Liga pushed towards a potential resumption.

Officials had hoped that the teams would be able to restart within 15 days after arrangements were made earlier this month for the league to start between June 17 and July 25. As it is, the Spanish Government has taken a different course, aligning itself with its Italian counterpart.

As with Serie A, there is no news of future start dates for competitive action, however. In announcing the decision in France, Philippe said: “The 2019-2020 season of professional sports, including football, will not be able to resume.”
