Kenny Launches 25-yard Rocket to Make Schalke Tie with Union Berlin

Schalke and Union Berlin faced off one another in a Bundesliga match at the Stadium a der Alten Försterei in Berlin, making Union the home side.

Both sides came into this game in poor shape since the resumption of the Bundesliga.

However, Union was the fastest out of the blocks as Marius Bülter teed Yunus Malli inside just five minutes, as he his shot reached goalkeeper Alexander Nübel straight from close range.

Nevertheless, the hosts made no mistake with their next attempt, blocking a free-kick by Anthony Ujah, who picked out Robert Andrich ahead of him to round off the break with his first goal of the Bundesliga.

The Berliners dominated the opening 20 minutes but were shocked just before the half-hour mark when Everton loanee Jonjoe Kenny launched a 25-yard rocket to level proceedings with the first goal effort by the Royal Blues.

This marked the second goal for Kenny in Berlin. The long-range strike by Jonjoe Kenny meant that Schalke caught up to earn an away point at Union Berlin and thereby cancelled the earlier opener by Robert Andrich.

The second half proved to be a tense affair with the midfield play being interrupted regularly by fouls. This meant that there were risks of being at a disadvantage and that no goalkeeper was properly checked.

Rabbi Matondo had the best chance for Schalke when his attempt on the stretch went over the bar, meaning that Rafal Gikiewicz went the whole game without making a save.

When Christopher Trimmel’s corner was flicked on, however, another chance fell to Marvin Friedrich but Nübel saved Schalke.

The draw extends the winless streaks of both sides in the league, with Union now waiting for three points on a seven-game and Schalke in 12 matches even longer.

It leaves Die Eisernen four points ahead of Fortuna Düsseldorf in 16th and the play-off relegation, while the Royal Blues sit in the table’s bottom half.
