After ATK Mohun Bagan released Antonio Habas (football transfer), their Indian Super League rivals FC Goa lost their manager, too. Among other recent updates on ISL Indian football players, Juan Ferrandoto decided to resign mid-season as FC Goa’s head coach.
40-year-old Juan Ferrandoto enjoyed his only full season with FC Goa in 2020-21. And in that campaign, he guided the ‘Gaurs’ to the semi-finals of the Indian Super League (ISL).
He was also in charge of the club during their maiden and historic continental voyage in the AFC Champions League. There too, they did reasonably well by finishing third in Group E.
Under the Spanish coach, the Gaurs also managed to win their first tournament when they lifted the Durand Cup. They won this trophy when they defeated Bengaluru FC on penalties in the final earlier this year.
Juan Ferrandoto Decided to Resign Mid-season as FC Goa’s Head Coach
But now, on Sunday, FC Goa president and co-owner Akshay Tandon confirmed Juan Ferrandoto’s departure through a series of tweets.
FC Goa revealed on Monday that they were taken by “surprise” at the “unexpected” decision of their coach to leave. More shocking for the Goan club is the fact that Ferrandoto is leaving them only midway through the 2021-22 season.
And here comes the biggest twist – Juan Ferrando is going to join rival ISL side ATK Mohun Bagan! After ATKMB released their super-successful coach Habas, Ferrandoto himself triggered a release clause in his own contract with FC Goa.
This release clause, upon activation, allows him to leave FC Goa with immediate effect.
A release clause in a professional contract allows other clubs to sign a player or coach from his or her current club for a particular amount, which the player or coach have to pay.
What Happened and What’s Next
Elsewhere, meanwhile, ATK Mohun Bagan parted ways with Antonio Habas on Saturday. This was because a string of poor results saw the side slip to the bottom half of the points table.
“We’re very disappointed to lose Juan. His decision to leave the club was rather unexpected and came as a surprise, particularly at this juncture of the season, where we are in the middle of the season,” FC Goa’s Director of Football Ravi Puskur said in a statement.
“We’re particularly disappointed that we were kept in the dark until yesterday morning where he communicated his desire to leave the club. However, once he stated his stance and the release clause was activated, we were left with little alternative. I wish Juan the best for his future,” added Puskur.
Via his Twitter series, FC Goa president Akshay Tandon said: “With disappointment, I’d like to confirm that @JuanFerrandoF has triggered his release clause, obliging us to release him of his duties so that he can join @atkmohunbaganfc.”
“As long the money gets deposited in our accounts, we do not have a choice in his decision,” Tandon tweeted.
Now, while finding a replacement, FC Goa said assistant coach Clifford Miranda will take interim charge of the first team.
