João Gomes is a Brazilian midfielder who competes in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A for Flamengo. The 21-year-old has recently been subject to a lot of interest from major clubs across Europe.
The midfielder has established himself as a staple for the Rio de Janeiro club in the past two seasons. He became the talk of the town when Fabrizio Romano revealed that Liverpool are scouting the 2020 Serie A winner.
Following this Flamengo president Marcos Braz has responded to these reports. He has revealed that no official contacts have been regarding the youngster. However, he expects bids to arrive soon.
“If you ask me, in 2023, the middle of that year I think there should be something,” Braz told ESPN. “I say ‘think’ because of the importance of the player, what he has grown into and for what he is today, a starter for Flamengo.
“We are very content with João Gomes and he is very happy with the board of Flamengo.
“We understood that they had to take a decision on [Gomes’ contract]. And we reached a consensus giving him a salary increase and protecting Flamengo.
“What did we want? The certainty of a 5-year deal, for protecting Flamengo as much as possible and, of course, to give him a good salary increase. That is what happened.
“Flamengo is very happy with Joao and I believe he is happy here.”
