Gundogan Would Like to Play on the Same Squad as Ronaldo and Messi

Ilkay Gundogan would love to play with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo on a squad. He’s unlikely to get the chance, however, if the two players retire soon.

It would still be a dream for the Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan to play alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

After its suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Premier League season will resume next week.

This will allow David Silva to play his final games with City before his departure at the end of his contract. “It is very enjoyable to play with Silva,” Gundogan said to Fanatik. “I love to play with David Silva. He’s a very smart football player. We get along well on and off the pitch. He is a top player.”

His ambition, though, is to play with two of the biggest legends of football.

For more than a decade, Barcelona’s captain Messi and Juventus superstar Ronaldo dominated world football.

Although at a senior international level Messi has not had his hands on any silverware, the Argentine legend is the all-time leading goal scorer of the Catalan giants with 627 in 718 appearances and has won 34 trophies with the club.

On the other hand, after nine years at the Santiago Bernabeu, Ronaldo topped Real Madrid’s goalscoring charts and, despite not winning as many titles as Messi during his illustrious career, led Portugal to success at Euro 2016 and in the inaugural League of Nations.

Messi and Ronaldo have won six and five Ballons d’Or respectively.

“Messi is a footballer who will not be born again as a talent. For me, Messi is a little higher,” Gundogan said. Gundogan thus rates Messi higher than Ronaldo but would appreciate the opportunity to feed the two from midfield:

“Messi and Ronaldo are also very important players. I would like to play with both of them on the same team one day.”
