West Brom Are Close to Relegation after 1-1 Draw with Wolves

Relegation-threatened West Bromwich Albion fought back to equalize with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday. But, West Brom are close to relegation after 1-1 draw with Wolves because they failed to win all three points.

Winning just one point for the draw at The Hawthorns was thus not enough. West Brom moved closer to dropping out of the Premier League anyway.

The singular point carried the second-from-bottom team to 26 points. This means that they are still 10 points away from the safety zone with only four games remaining.

Meanwhile, Wolves remain safe, but not spectacular, in the 12th spot with 42 points.

This derby, played yesterday, was hampered by belting rain and swirling wind.

The bad weather got worse in the last 20 minutes, and opportunity was hard to come by for both sides.

Fabio Silva handed Wolves a lead in half time, in fact, at 45+2 minutes.

But Mbaye Diagne equalised for the home side in the 62nd minute and the match ended a 1-1 draw.

The First Half

Just at the half-hour mark, Wolves’ flying full-back Nelson Semedo dispossessed Baggies defender Semi Ajayi in the penalty area. But though he managed get a shot off, West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone spoiled the effort.

West Brom’s first effort came when Wolves defender Romain Saiss scrambled clear the ball from the visitors’ goal.

However, Diagne expertly headed the ball back, which didn’t lead to a goal albeit exposing errors in the defending.

But on the stroke of half-time Wolves went ahead after a swift passing move set up by American Owen Otasowie.

Teenager Fabio Silva finished the play, whose effort deflected off of Kyle Bartley to loop up and over Johnstone’s head.

Wolves thus led the first half by 1-0, and retweeted a tweet praising Silva right after their social media boycott over the weekend along with other football clubs:

The Second Half

Following the break, Mike Dean took over refereeing duties from an injured Paul Tierney.

West Brom looked a lot livelier as both Conor Townsend and Conor Gallagher made attempts to score. Their efforts for a goal were skilfully stopped by Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio did well to stop.

But the Wolves keeper remained rooted to the ground when Diagne struck. This allowed him to equalise in the 62nd minute.

A long, high cross from Townsend on the left fell perfectly for the tall Senegal striker. And Diagne barely moved as he powered home a header from a standing position.

Diagne has indeed proved to be crucial to the West Brom attack, as can be seen here as well!

Adama Traore met a cross from substitute Daniel Podence at 90+1 minutes of death time.

But Sam Johnstone saved the ball again, from Traore’s header, and the points were shared as the match ended 1-1.
