Southgate Explains Excluding Trent from His Squad

England head coach Gareth Southgate has explained why he has not called up Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Liverpool defender has been excluded for upcoming national team matches.

And Southgate explained to Sky Sports: “There are areas where we have incredible competition for a place in the squad. Trent has been very unlucky. I don’t think he’s played at the level he’s shown in the last couple of years, but I believe he’s very close to it. He’s been taking steps in the right direction the last few weeks.

“We just think Rhys James and Kieran Trippier have had exceptional seasons with their clubs, Walker is in great form with Man City. We have other players in the league who play well in that position – Cash at Villa and Ayling at Leeds.”

“Trent, of course, is a super talent. I’m sure he will play a big role for England in the future,” he added.
