Roma vs Ajax Extended Highlights

Roma drew 1-1 at home to Ajax in the return leg of the Europa League quarter-final. And because they won the first leg 2-1, Roma will be advancing to the semi-final stage now. To see how Roma avoided an aggregate draw, catch up on the Roma vs Ajax extended highlights.

Watch the Roma vs Ajax extended highlights here, and read about them below:

  • Roma were the first to attempt a goal, in the 5th minute. Lorenzo Pellegrini ran up to the Ajax goalpost, with everyone in pursuit, but goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg blocked his strike.
  • Nicolás Tagliafico responded to a corner kick by Dušan Tadić in the 10th minute with a header. But, unfortunately for Ajax, the ball flew over the goalpost.
  • Antony ingeniously intercepted Pau López’s pass to his player at 12:45, and Ajax tried again in vain to score.
  • Just a minute later, Ajax players were defending their goalpost against a Roma attempt. But Pellegrini’s shot didn’t get through Stekelenburg.
  • Antony opened up another chance to score in the 20th minute, but it was in vain.
  • The rest of the first half was eventful but Antony fell and was likely a bit injured. At half-time, he was replaced by 19-year-old Brian Brobbey.
  • In the second half, Brobbey’s goal at the 49th minute caused a bit of a scruffle on the pitch.
  • Carles Pérez fouled Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the build-up to Ajax’s second goal at the 57th minute. So, the referee, after much deliberation, did not count the goal.
  • Soon after, Jordan Veretout received a yellow card.
  • In the 71st minute, Roma equalized. Riccardo Calafiori ran up to the Ajax post and his pass somehow landed at Edin Džeko’s feet. The latter cleanly hit the ball home.
  • Džeko left the pitch soon after- he received a yellow card and Borja Mayoral replaced him.
  • It was a game of many yellow cards. Though many players on either side fouled many others, another goal did not come.

So, our prediction of the match was bang on!
