At Old Trafford on Thursday, Manchester United beat Roma on a landslide 6-2 victory. For the first leg of this Europa League semi-final fixture, United humiliated Roma.
Equalized on 2-2 in the first half, United then went on to dominate the second half.
Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani both scored braces, and the remaining two goals came from Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood.
The First Half
Fernandes opened the scoring in the match early, assisted by Cavani. Pogba started the play by passing to Cavani. The Uruguayan passed to the Portuguese, who lifted the ball over Pau Lopez.
However, this lead lasted only 6 minutes, after which Roma took a 1-2 lead until half-time.
Lorenzo Pellegrini scored on a penalty in the 15th minute. Five minutes after the first goal, Pogba accidentally fouled a penalty.
In an attempt to block a cross from the right in a sliding start, he played with his hand on the goal-out line. Pellegrini converted this penalty into a goal for 1-1.
And in the 34th minute, Pellegrini set up Edin Džeko from the left wing for the latter to score.
Cavani missed a nice opportunity to score for 2-2 and the first half thus ended with Roma leading 1-2.
The Second Half
In the 49th minute, Cavani put Fernandes’ pass right into the net, and United equalized 2-2.
15 minutes later, Cavani shined again. He picked up a rebound and scored from close range. This second goal at the 64th minute brought United back in the game for a fierce 3-2.
7 minutes later, in the 71st minute, United won a penalty as Chris Smalling collided with Cavani. Fernandes converted the penalty when scored for 4-2.
A Fernandes corner found Pogba, who headed in the ball in the 75th minute.
After a throw-in by Roma, in a counter-attack, Cavani beautifully set up substitute Mason Greenwood, who added a sixth goal.
With two goals and as many assists, Manchester United fans crowned Edinson Cavani as the man of the match. He won 55% of the votes on the official club site, while Fernandes was second with 30%.
Thus, Manchester United beat Roma on a landslide 6-2 victory. It’s not a 7-1 flush, like in the 2006 Champions League, but it will be quite enough.
