How Did PSG Advance in Champions League?

Bayern Munich beat Paris Saint-Germain 0-1 in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals. So how did PSG advance in Champions League to the semi-finals instead?

Bayern won 0-1 over PSG, thanks to the singular goal from Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in the 40th minute.

Despite several attempts from Neymar, PSG did not score once in the entirety of the match. Nor did Bayern score another goal, which would mean that they enjoyed the promotion rather than PSG.

How did PSG advance in Champions League?

PSG won the first leg of the quarterfinals over Bayern. They won the match last week 3-2.

So, while Bayern won the second leg 0-1, the aggregate result of both the legs combined came to a 3-3 draw.

The tie-breaker is always the number of away goals. And PSG has more of those. Had Bayern scored again last night, they would have topped the away goals’ chart.

Therefore, PSG were the team that advanced into the semi-finals, defeating Bayern, to whom they lost last year’s UCL final. Ah, sweet revenge!

How do away goals count in Champions League?

In the Champions League and Europa League, if two teams are level on aggregate after both legs, there’s a tie-breaker.

The number of away goals in the total 180 minutes of football acts as tie-breaker. The team who has scored more goals away from home will progress, as is explained with examples here.

This rule stands despite a team not winning both matches, because the aggregate tally does not exactly reflect that.

These away goals count even in extra time and neutral venues, which are used oftener now due to the pandemic.

So, this is how Bayern lost the qualification into the semi-finals. The won the second leg over PSG, tied 3-3 with them on aggregate, and lost on the away goal count.

As this Twitter user (tried to) explain succinctly:

So, Michael Owen came very close to predicting the match.
