City Win 1-2 on Mahrez and De Bruyne’s Goals

City Win 1-2 on Mahrez and De Bruyne’s Goals

In the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals, for the Paris Saint-Germain vs Manchester City fixture, the guests won. Though Marqinhos gave PSG an early lead, Riyad Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne fixed that. The Parc des Princes therefore saw City win 1-2 on Mahrez and De Bruyne’s goals, that is, two away goals.

The Citizens, because of an away victory with two away goals, are closer to advancing to the Champions League final.

City’s home ground, Etihad Stadium, will host the return match, that is, the second leg, next Tuesday.

City Win 1-2 on Mahrez and De Bruyne’s Goals

PSG’s First Half

PSG opened the scoring and they had the first chance to do so as well. After just thirteen minutes into the match, Neymar shot under the crossbar.

But Ederson deflected the ball which then converted into a corner kick for the guests.

After a pass from the corner, Marquinhos found himself succinctly placed in the penalty area. He aimed a head shot from the fourth meter well and gave the hosts the first lead, 1-0.

Manchester City had a wonderful opportunity to equalize in the 21st minute.

The ball from a throw-in into the penalty area found Bernardo Silva. He slid to meet the ball and stuck a leg out to send it flying in a clever corner shot. However, the shot missed the net as Navas was alert at the goalpost.

Seven minutes later, Neymar struck a corner kick which found Leandro Paredes whose header, however, struck past the goal.

In the 42nd minute, another equalizing chance presented itself to City. The ball went to the sixteenth meter to Phil Foden, who was completely unmarked. The City player took the ball and hit it towards goal without resistance, but Navas alertly pushed it aside.

Thus, PSG eventually led 1-0 until the break at half-time, and indeed, for much of the second half.

City’s Second Half

As late as twenty minutes after the change of sides, City equalised in a bizarre way.

The Citizens launched another attack. City’s players played the ball from right to left.

But far from the goal, Kevin de Bruyne kicked the ball into the penalty area.

Although he wasn’t even trying to score, and none of his teammates even reached the ball, it curved into the net.

Navas was so focused on the City players jumping to meet the shot that he noticed de Bruyne’s ball flying in too late. And this is how the City captain equalized the tally 1-1.

In the 71st minute, the English team won a free kick. The PSG players’ slack wall of defense proved fatal as it parted after the shot of Riyad Mahrez. The ball flew right from between the PSG players, and again, completely surprised Navas.

The winger has now bagged 12 goals and provided seven assists in 44 appearances across all competitions this season.

Six minutes later, Idrissa Gueye attacked Ilkay Gundogan with a straight leg. After a brutal foul, the referee didn’t even think twice and immediately showed the PSG player a red card.

Three minutes before the end of regular time, Phil Foden displayed some capital individual play.

The City player passed several rivals and fired a shot from the area of the sixteenth meter. But Navas couldn’t be fooled now and blocked the ball immediately.
