World Cup Group C Results – Italy and Bulgaria Drew 1-1

Italy got off to a great start. Lorenzo Insigne fired wide from a tight angle, but Federico Chiesa put the Azzurri ahead after just 16 minutes.

Chiesa cut down the right flank and skipped past a couple of defenders. He then fired home from the edge of the box after a one-two pass with Ciro Immobile.

Ciro Immobile had a good chance from inside the box. But Bulgarian goalkeeper Georgiev made the first of many saves against Chiesa, who arrived too late to score.

Meanwhile, Bulgaria scored the game’s first goal just five minutes before halftime, with their first shot on target.

Kiril Despodov dribbled past Florenzi on the left flank, put the ball in. But he found Atanas Iliev, who cut in front of Acerbi to score an unexpected equalizer.

Then, Italy dominated the second half, creating numerous scoring chances.

Immobile rounded Georgiev, but all he got from this was a corner kick. This is because he carried the ball wide and could only shoot from a tight angle.

With a deflected shot from the edge of the box, Nicol Barella collected another corner kick.

Georgiev made the save of the night against Chiesa, again, who attempted to score with a chip shot.

But the Bulgarian goalkeeper’s cat-like reflexes denied him a chance to score. He then also denied Immobile, once more, before Giacomo Raspadori replaced him as goalkeeper.

Italy pushed forward in search of the game-winning goal, but Bulgaria thwarted the Azzurri time and again.

Still, the Azzurri are now unbeaten in 35 games, matching the record set by Spain and Brazil.

Now, Switzerland is up next, with the Azzurri visiting Basel on Sunday.
