World Cup Football Results – Serbia Secured a Late Win to Qualify
In front of a home crowd, Portugal wasted little time taking the lead after just 2 minutes of play. Bernardo Silva dispossessed Nemanja Gudelj on the edge of his own box. The ball eventually dropped to Renato Sanches to open the score.
Serbia grew into the game as the first half went on. They even went close to restore the parity within 10 minutes as Dusan Vlahovic rattled the frame of the goal.
Shortly after the half hour mark, though, the visitors did find a proper equalizer. Rui Patricio reacted to Dusan Tadic’s shot and the ball ended up in the back of his net.
Fernando Santos had plenty to ponder at the interval, and his side could’ve been behind after Vlahović found the target. But the Fiorentina striker was offside.
The ‘Eagles’ introduced Aleksandar Mitrovic for the second half, knowing nothing but a win would secure them a qualification.
However, this opened up spaces on the counter. And the hosts exploited this, with Sanches squandering a huge chance to restore the lead.
Serbia’s best chance for victory came through the Fulham forward as he met a cross from the left. But his glancing header went wide.
The Serbians however, continued to press for a winner and found the breakthrough in the 90th minute to stun Lisbon. Mitrovic made no mistake this time as he sent a powerful header, past the helpless Patricio.
