World Cup Football Results – Netherlands Win Marginally over Latvia

The Netherlands provided prolonged excitement, but eventually, they did control the game enough to beat Latvia by a razor-thin margin. So yesterday saw, in World Cup football results, Netherlands win marginally over Latvia, an early goal giving them 0-1 away.

Triumphing 0-1 win over Latvia on Friday, the Netherlands regained control of their Group G standing in World Cup qualifications.

Oranje won an unimpressive match in Riga when Netherlands’ Davy Klaassen scored the game’s only goal in the first half.

After scoring 10 goals in their previous two matches against Montenegro and Turkey, Louis van Gaal’s side struggled against Latvia. Ironically, Latvia have only won World Cup qualification matches against Andorra (the football news) and Gibraltar since 2013 ended.

The Netherlands got off to a good start with Klaassen’s opening goal. It was a well-taken volley on the turn from Memphis Depay’s corner, at the 19th minute of the match.

Following a mistake on the halfway line by captain Virgil van Dijk, Klaassen had to make a double block. So, just a minute later, he doubly stopped against Andrejs Ciganiks and Roberts Uldrikis at the opposite end.

After the interval, too, Latvia remained a threat to Netherlands. Although Cody Gakpo should have made it more comfortable for the visitors six minutes after the break, he headed Daley Blind’s cross over the bar when Klaassen was in a better position to meet it.

The Netherlands continued to have roughly 75% possession but that was without really troubling Roberts Ozols in the Latvia goal.

Only substitute Ryan Gravenberch’s shot from within the penalty area actually reached the keeper’s legs, which promptly blocked it though.

After the Netherlands failed to clear a corner, Latvia almost pulled off a late shock. But Igors Tarasovs managed a one-handed save from Justin Bijlow.
