The hosts began the match on the front foot, as Ivan Perisic tested the water early on for Croatia. Perisic cut in from the left but only to see Matvei Safonov save his effort.

Andrej Kramaric was next to come close when he met a cross from the right with a header. But the ball went straight at the Russian goalkeeper, who stopped it.

The one-way traffic continued, with Marcelo Brozovic reacting quickest to Safonov’s clearance. And he saw his resulting long-range effort go wide of the post.

Dalić‘s team kept probing, and Perisic’s strike from Mario Pasalic’s cross missed the target.

Russia, on the other hand, seemed content to hold on for a point. They failed to register a single goal attempt as the half time whistle blew.

Kramaric took advantage of the wet pitch conditions after restart. The flooded surface held up the ball for him to strike an effort over the bar.

So, this is how the hosts continued to press.

It was Vyacheslav Karavaev who had Russia’s first shot of the contest with 15 minutes remaining on the clock. However, Ivo Grbic, who had not been involved in the action up until this point, saved Karavaev’s angled attempt.

Valey Karpin’s men resilience was undone in the 81st minute, when Fedor Kudryashov sent the ball behind his own goalie. He was actually attempting to clear a cross.

This own goal from Russia gave Croatia a decisive lead.
