After relying on Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace in the 2-1 win against the Republic of Ireland (football results), Portugal now dominated in Baku even without him (the football news). So, with a 3-0 win over Azerbaijan in a qualifying World Cup football match, Portugal now top Group A.
Portugal reclaimed first place in Group A after a 3-0 victory over Azerbaijan in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier.
Fernando Santos’ men shared the goals this time around, in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, who is facing a suspension.
Before his suspension though, Ronaldo became the all-time international top men’s goal scorer against the Republic of Ireland.
Bruno Fernandes assisted Bernardo Silva for the first goal. He then sent the ball in a cross for Diogo Jota to set up Andre Silva for the second.
Without Sahruddin Mahammadaliyev, Azerbaijan’s situation could have been much worse, but the goalkeeper was powerless to stop Jota. The latter added a third goal for Portugal in the second half.
World Cup Football Match – Portugal Now Top Group A
The visitors dominated the first 15 minutes of the match, registering 66.7 per cent possession. Still, Fernandes lashed the only half-chance over.
In the end, Portugal’s possession patience paid off, with Bernardo Silva ghosting in to latch onto Fernandes’ deep cross. And Silva volleyed home with his left foot via the left-hand post.
Fernandes also played a part in the second goal, crossing from the right flank to find Jota. Jota, in turn, redirected the ball back across the goal for Andre Silva to tap in inside the six-yard box.
Four minutes later, after being rolled through by Fernandes, Andre Silva should have doubled his tally. But instead, he dragged a glorious chance wide with the goal at his mercy.
Jota missed a goal chance a minute after the break when he sliced wide of an almost open net. This was after capitalizing on Fernandes’ drilled teaser from the right flank.
Then, Fernandes attempted a goal from distance, but Mahammadaliyev saved the dipping effort before saving Bernando Silva’s fizzing left-footed strike.
Jota finally found the back of the net after Mahammadaliyev denied him from close range. He blasted over, nodding home after Joao Cancelo’s delivery from the right.
