Goal.com has confirmed the transfer rumours – Roma are nearing a deal for Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Arsenal on loan. As part of the Serie A club signing him, the Gunners man will undergo a medical with Roma on Wednesday.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles has, of late, fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal and is thus seeking a move out.
The 24-year-old midfielder made his Arsenal debut during the 2014-15 season. However, he only truly broke out two seasons later with 28 appearances during the 2017-18 campaign.
Maitland-Niles, after becoming an Arsenal regular under Unai Emery, made as many as 83 appearances over the next three seasons. But recently, the young player fell down the pecking order a bit under Mikel Arteta’s reign.
In fact, he has featured just 11 times this campaign, having earned five England caps in 2020.
Transfer Rumours – Roma Are Nearing a Deal for Ainsley Maitland-Niles
The midfielder is thus going to join the Giallorossi on loan for the remainder of the 2021-22 season, at least. However, Roma do not have the option to make the loan permanent.
Roma head coach Jose Mourinho sees Maitland-Niles as a player that can play all over the midfield. So, Maitland-Niles will be offering Roma’s squad a much-needed reinforcement amid the manager’s complaints about squad depth.
And should indeed finalise Roma Maitland-Niles’ move, he would become the latest English player to head to Italy.
He would join Chris Smalling and Tammy Abraham (the football news) at Roma. The latter, in fact, joined the club this past summer after falling out of favour at Chelsea.
And he, like his successors from England to Italy here, is moving in search of more regular football.
