Yesterday, among other Serie A football results, Roma’s late goal won them a match over their Italian rival club Sassuolo. AS Roma took on Sassuolo at the Stadio Olimpico in the third round, and won in the nick of time.
It was a truly special evening for ‘The Special One’ – it was Jose Mourinho’s 1000th match as a professional manager.
Unexpectedly, Sassuolo dominated the opening half, but it was still the Roman side who found themselves ahead first.
Just before the half time break, Bryan Cristante gave the hosts a lead.
Adopting a more direct approach, however, the ‘Neroverdi’ drew level midway through the second half. Filip Djuricic bundled the ball home from close range for his second goal of the campaign to make it 1-1.
With the seconds ebbing away in the match, both teams tried to break out of their 1-1 headlock.
Finally, El Shaarawy unleashed an almighty shot from the edge of the box, which ended up in the Sassuolo net.
Even that was not the end of the drama though, because of Sassuolo’s Gianluca Scamacca’s equalizer in the 93rd minute.
However, referees and VAR ruled his strike out for being offside. This confirmed Roma as the winners here and also the new leaders of Serie A on.
