The First Half

Riccardo Saponara won an early penalty and Dušan Vlahović naturally stepped up to take it. Much to everyone’s astonishment, though, it didn’t end up in the back of the net. To his credit, however, this was the first time in his Serie A career that he didn’t clear a penalty.

The Genoa goalkeeper then stopped Vlahović’s shot again, moments later, after a lovely pass from Nico González put him through. But Álvaro Odriozola powered home the rebound with his left, and Fiorentina’s right-back has now scored in two straight games.

There certainly was a rebound goal theme here, as Giacomo Bonaventura rose very well for a perfect Cristiano Biraghi cross. While Sirigu denied him at first, Jack made no mistake the second time around, scoring his 50th Serie A goal.

Because Fiorentina’s primary attacking threat is full of fullbacks now, it was previous assistant Biraghi who scored the third himself. The captain, like Odriozola, found the net for the second game in a row. This time, though, it was slightly less scruff, a sweet strike off a free kick.

And these weren’t isolated incidents, either, as Fiorentina dominated every phase of play, in their 2022’s most dominant 45 minutes.

The Second Half

Clearly eager to make up for his missed penalty, Vlahović latched onto a nice Jack pass. He took an absurd touch to bring it down in stride. Vlahović then fulfilled his obvious desire to chip Sirigu with an outrageously delicate lob that left the Genoa goalkeeper stranded.

A blatant handball to deny Saponara from finding Vlahović in the area gave Biraghi another fee kick. And Biraghi, being the king of free kicks last night, scored again here.

But Fiorentina didn’t stop there – Jonathan Ikone got his first Viola assist with a silky run down the left. He then crossed the obvious aerial target lurking alone at the back post and Lucas Torreira, instead, nodded it home.

Referee Fabio Maresca didn’t offer up any stoppage time, and you can see why. This football match was utter carnage as Fiorentina completely destroyed a hapless Genoa.

There was nothing that went wrong; it was magnificent and comprehensive and about as fun as anything you’ll ever see.
