Romain Saiss struck a superb volley in first-half stoppage time to save Wolverhampton Wanderers against Brighton & Hove Albion. Wolves thus won a Premier League match on Wednesday whereas the home side’s winless run extended to 11 league games. So, in Premier League football results, Wolves won 0-1 away at Brighton last night, thanks to Saiss’ singular goal.

The defeat leaves Brighton, who have not won since beating Leicester City 2-1 on September 19, in 13th place. They just have 20 points, whereas Wolves are now four points above them in eighth position of the league standings.

Brighton, who had the better chances in the first half, thought they had cleared the danger from a corner. This was just before the break, and, to Brighton’s surprise, Wolves’ Ruben Neves chipped a beautiful ball over the defence. And when this Neves pass landed, Saiss was on hand to score a goal for Wolves with a deft volley.

So, Wolves secured a 0-1 away lead at 45+1 minutes, which they would retain throughout the rest of the match.

Still, Wolves upped the tempo after the break, hitting the woodwork twice.

Meanwhile, though Yves Bissouma missed from point-blank range, Brighton, desperate for an equaliser, mostly mustered up unsuccessful pot-shots from distance.

On the other hand, Fernando Marcal’s looping cross bounced off the top of the crossbar just after the break.

Brighton struggled to keep up while Saiss almost scored a second goal but his thunderous shot hit the post instead.

Wolves could have put the game beyond doubt when substitute Adama Traore orchestrated a three-on-one counterattack. But Daniel Podence aimed his drive straight at the keeper to make an easy save.

A problem with the referee’s communications equipment right when the second half began contributed to 13 minutes of added time.

The two teams received this extra time at the end. But even then, Brighton barely managed to force a save from Jose Sa in the Wolves goal.
