Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has tested positive for coronavirus just days before the start of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON). Though he left Arsenal early for international duty (football today), this result has cancelled his participation for some tournament matches.
Aubameyang has suffered a tragic and turbulent few weeks, losing his place in the Arsenal team. Gunners’ manager Mikel Arteta dropped the former Arsenal captain due to a disciplinary breach.
He was also stripped of his captaincy by Mikel Arteta (the football news).
But, because he had played little football recently, Aubameyang was hoping to play impactfully at AFCON, underway from January 9.
On that starting date, hosts Cameroo will n face Burkina Faso.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Has Tested Positive for Coronavirus
AFCON 2022 thus begins on Sunday, and Aubameyang’s Gabon will be playing their opening group-stage fixture against Comoros. That showdown will go down the day after the start, on January 10.
In anticipation, the Gabonese FA even posted photos of the squad arriving in Cameroon on January 6. Indeed, the Gunners forward is featuring in one of the images, although it’s unclear if he is now in isolation.
This is because Gabon posted the update before news of Aubameyang’s positive test came to light.
Gabon play Ghana four days after this Comoros match before concluding their pool-stage matches by facing Morocco on January 18.
Should Aubameyang need self-isolation due to testing positive, he would be doubtful to feature in at least the first game. It is unclear at this stage if he would then be unable to participate in the rest of the competition.
The former Dortmund striker has already missed games for Arsenal in the first half of the 2021-22 campaign. That pro-longed absence, too, was due to his testing positive for Covid-19.
