According to long-time Barcelona team-mate Xavi, Lionel Messi could stay in football until he’s almost 40.
“He still has 5 or 7 very good years left in him.” Xavi said of Messi during an Instagram conversation with Samuel Eto’o, another ex-Barca forward. “He’s taking good care of himself so he will keep playing till he’s 37, 38 or 39. I’m sure he’ll be playing at the Qatar World Cup.”
This season’s six-time Ballon d’Or winner was in his usual impressive shape for Barca, scoring 24 goals in all competitions until the coronavirus pandemic brought a halt to the proceedings.
Messi could never have been so critical to the ultimate chances of success of the Blaugrana, and Xavi believes that Argentina’s star has much left to offer – both for the club and globally.
If Messi reaches certain endurance standards, Xavi even seems to have expected to take charge of him as head coach.
