Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane will miss the second leg of Real Madrid vs Chelsea, the club has confirmed.
Varane’s medical diagnosis shows an injury to the right leg withdrawal muscle, writes the official website of Real Madrid.
Varane Will Miss the Second Leg of Real Madrid vs Chelsea
Basically, a groin injury will prevent him from participating in the return leg, after he played the first leg already. His Real squad tied 1-1 with Chelsea in the home leg, with Chelsea securing an away goal.
For this reason, the 28-year-old will miss the return leg of the Champions League semi-final against Chelsea on May 5.
The Frenchman then played in a La Liga game against Osasuna on 1 May, which ended 2-0. But he was injured in the match, and so, after the break, Nacho Fernandez replaced him.
Absentees and the Real Madrid Line-up
Raphael Varane recovered from contracting coronavirus last month to play a couple of games, domestic and European, for Real Madrid.
But he’s looking at another suspension of play due to an injury.
Real Madrid defender and captain Sergio Ramos too, was stricken with coronavirus very shortly after Varane came down with it.
He may return in time for the return leg against Chelsea, though he missed facing Osasuna unlike Varane. Also, another defender, Ferland Mendy will make a comeback for the match on May 6th.
But, along with Varane, Uruguayan midfielder Fede Valverde. The 22-year-old has not yet recovered COVID-19 as Varane and Ramos did.
So, the Real Madrid line-up may have Nacho and Eder Militao as part of their centre-back pairing against Chelsea.
If Zidane decides not to rush Mendy, Ramos and Militao could play as the two centre-backs, with Nacho playing as Real Madrid’s left-back.
Zidane will surely go for the tried and tested midfield three of Toni Kroos, Casemiro and Luka Modric. Valverde has always been a great option off the bench, but looks highly unlikely to feature against Chelsea.
Real Madrid Defender Unable to Agree to New Contract
Raphael Varane remains unable to agree to a new deal as a Real Madrid defender with the club.
Varane’s current contract with Real Madrid runs until June 2022.
The 28-year-old Frenchman could leave Madrid because his agent is already in talks with other clubs, reports journalist Nicolo Schira.
Manchester United and Chelsea are keenly interested, based on Varane’s agent’s communications.
