Chelsea attempted to recruit Philippe Coutinho when he was only 14, Brendan Rodgers has confirmed.
“Philippe was one I met from my days at Chelsea, and when he was 14, we wanted to bring him to Chelsea but he had already signed for Inter Milan,” Rodgers told The Beautiful Game Podcast. “During the summer we spoke about him and kept watching him and suddenly he was free and at 19 I thought: ‘Wow, cool, let’s bring this boy in’”
Coutinho played at Liverpool in five and a half seasons, scoring 54 goals in all competitions before his controversial move to Barcelona midway through 2017-18.
He stated his reasons for wanting to sign the 14-year-old back then: “In the first six months, as I looked at the team, there were some things that we were lacking.”
