Real Madrid’s Galactico Era Is Over Due to Super League

Real Madrid’s Galactico Era Is Over Due to Super League

Real Madrid’s first galáctico era was between 2000–2007, when Florentino Pérez started as president. Now, Pérez’s dream of a return of Real Madrid’s Galactico era is over due to Super League.

Galácticos is the Spanish word for galactics, which refers to superstars.

The word derived as a way to refer to the expensive, world-famous football players that Real Madrid recruited.

These superstars were vetted under the “galácticos” policy which was pursued during Florentino Pérez’s presidency at Real Madrid.

In his first tenure, in the early 2000s, he purchased at least one galáctico in the summer of every year. Pérez also bought current Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane as one of his superstar players.

We can safely say that this superstar era of Real lasted between 2000–2007, more or less. It began with the signing of Luís Figo in 2000, and ended with the departure of David Beckham in 2007.

The term, though initially an optimistic one denoting the formation of a world-class team, is now even used ironically. This is because the level of excellence and success expected out of such an expensive team, the superstars simply couldn’t fulfilled.

New Galáctico Dream

Real Madrid were allegedly pursuing star strikers Kylian Mbappe from PSG and Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund.

However, president Florentino Pérez wanted to sign both superstars, not either one, because he dreamed of a renewed Galácticos era.

He wanted to bring the two players over to the Santigao Bernabeu, in what would’ve been a near impossible financial feat.

Indeed, The Independent reveal that such “star signings” were a driving force behind Pérez’s desire to form the Super League.

But the breakaway league, which promised pay-outs in billions to Founding clubs, disbanded two days after Pérez formed it. The entire football world’s overwhelming rejection of the project attributed to its failure.

The pay-out money, which the club would desperately need to sign both Haaland and Mbappe, would no longer be theirs.

Now, it is uncertain whether the Spanish side can buy either of these two big signings that

So, while a breakaway league was initially a way for Pérez to sign superstars, now, Real Madrid’s Galactico era is over due to Super League instead.
