Barcelona, Sevilla and Ajax were all linked to a bid for Igor Gomes, and now, Real Madrid has also shown signs of pursuing the midfielder.
Rai, Sao Paulo’s executive director of football, acknowledged that many European teams, took notice of the talent of the 21-year-old. However, Sao Paulo has not witnessed any formal approach by Real Madrid.
Asked if the ties to Madrid included something, Rai told Globo Esporte: “It’s real. What we may claim is that Igor Gomes is a player who attracts European clubs’ attention. Yet official communication has not been created. It’s a fact he’s sparking curiosity in. I’ve always talked to European friends who have made remarks, but that’s it.”
General Manager Alexandre Passaro added: “Real Madrid or some other team has not formally discussed this. What we do know is that Real Madrid respects and supports Igor even like they certainly pursue several other young talents around the globe, many in our own team.
“And Igor will be able to get a Portuguese passport over the next six months, which would mean he wouldn’t be taking up an international player spot at a European club. But nothing is happening now.”
In recent seasons, Madrid has invested extensively on Brazilian talent picking up Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo Goes and Reinier Jesus, with agent Wagner Ribeiro of Gomes stating last month that he was eager to send the man to Los Blancos.
