This effectively rules out Varane for the Real Madrid-Liverpool quarter-final fixture in the UEFA Champions League.

Madrid are already without winger Eden Hazard, who is not fit enough after the latest in a long list of injuries. Sergio Ramos is also injured.

Nacho Fernandez will now be the replacement in central defence at the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium.

Moreover, Eder Militao will likely start for the match now, because of Varane’s last-minute brush with the virus.

Meanwhile, though they only just recovered from an injury crisis, Liverpool have no fresh injury worries for the quarter-final meeting.

For their side, Diogo Jota should start, after he scored twice as a substitute against Arsenal in EPL on Saturday.

Real Madrid and Liverpool have won the competition 19 times between them.
