This season, Real Madrid has been unable to depend on Sergio Ramos on a regular basis. Ramos will not travel to Europe for the Spain team for Euro 2020.
Spain captain Sergio Ramos has been left out of Luis Enrique’s Euro 2020 squad, after an injury-plagued 2020-21 season.
Ramos made 21 appearances in all competitions for Real Madrid this season, missing 31 games.
With Ramos on the field, Zinedine Zidane’s team conceded more often (1.0 per game vs. 0.8).
Meanwhile, Aymeric Laporte is one of the centre-back choices favoured over the veteran. Laporte only recently switched allegiances from France to Spain.
Under Luis Enrique, the 35-year-old has kept the armband for Spain. But he only played 50 minutes of the March World Cup qualifiers against Greece and Kosovo. Soon after, he returned to Madrid injured.
Moreover, surprisingly, former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique did not appoint a single player from Real Madrid to his finals squad.
