Pulisic Is the First American Man to Score in a Champions League Semi-final

Christian Pulisic’s goal for Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final was quickly equalized by Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema. But this early goal still made history as Pulisic is the first American man to score in a Champions League semi-final now.

The former Borussia Dortmund ace needed just 14 minutes to open the scoring for Chelsea.

Pulisic ran to the Real goalpost early in the first half with a wonderful individual effort.

The USMNT international dodged Thibaut Courtois, and the former Chelsea goalkeeper flailed in vain to stop the Blues man.

Despite getting past Courtois, several Madrid defenders still blocked Pulisic’s path to the goalpost.

But Pulisic drilled his shot past these defenders straight into the net, giving the guests a 1-0 lead.

Thanks to his scoring, Chelsea now have an advantage of one away goal, scored at Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano for Real Madrid vs Chelsea.

His goal also made U.S. history, as he was the first (male) American semi-final scorer in Champion’s League history.

America’s First Goal in the Semi-finals

After Tuesday’s goal, Pulisic is the first American man to score in a Champions League semi-final.

Pulisic has thus joined a select group of USMNT stars to net in the knockout stages.

Indeed, only three of his fellow countrymen can boast of scoring a knockout goal in the competition: DaMarcus Beasley, Jermaine Jones, and Tyler Adams.

However, none of them, before Pulisic’s goal yesterday, had ever managed scored in the semis.

Moreover, Pulisic set another record for the Americans. His goal means that Pulisic is now the highest-scoring American in Champions League history as well.

This is his fifth career goal in the competition, and it breaks the American record previously held by Beasley.

Finally, Pulisic is also the first U.S.-born player to score a competitive goal against Real Madrid, in all competitions.
