Portugal had a difficult start against Luxembourg in the qualifiers match for the 2022 World Cup. The rivals opened the score.
In the end, however, Cristiano Ronaldo’s team finished with a 1-3 victory.
So, in Group A, while Portugal had a difficult start against Luxembourg, they eventually pulled through as winners.
It seemed that it would be a very easy meeting for the Portuguese national team. Indeed, the expectation was that the visitors would flood Luxembourg with goals.
However, it started differently- with Luxembourg in the lead.
The guests struggled to find a way to put the ball in the opponent’s goalpost. What they got as a gift instead was the opponent’s goal.
It was the hosts who scored the only goal of the first half. In the 30th minute, Gerson Rodrigues’ shot found its way into the net.
The Portuguese’s reply did not come as quickly as they’d like. It wasn’t until the second half that Diogo Jota scored to tie the game.
After such a change of sides, though, the guests took up more initiative.
Cristiano Ronaldo showed his artistry by increasing the lead to 1-2.
However, the visitors did not follow up on their goal. Luxembourg, not only defending but also attacking from time to time, put them in a good position.
But the Portuguese finally increased their lead in the 80th minute with a Joao Palhinha goal.
Luxembourg – Portugal (1-3):
Goals: Gerson Rodrigues (30), Diogo Jota (45+2), Cristiano Ronaldo (50), Joao Palhinha (80).
