Here is how supporters at Providence Park saw Portland Timbers and Club America tie 1-1:
  • Club America, Liga MX giants, took the initial lead in the match, just at the stroke of halftime. At 45+1 minutes, Claudio Bravo committed a foul on Richard Sanchez in his own box. After referee Escobar gave out a penalty kick whistle, Roger Martinez sent Timbers goalkeeper Jeff Attinella flying the wrong way. He coolly slotted home from the penalty spot, giving the visitors the 1-0 lead and a crucial away goal.
  • In the second half, the Timbers got close to equalizing from the run of play a few times but couldn’t.
  • Dairon Asprilla almost found an equalizer by magic, in the 50th minute. He dodged two defenders on the left side of the Club America box and struck from a seemingly impossible angle. The strike may have been intended as a cross. Nonetheless, the ball nearly did go in at the far post for a potentially spectacular goal, but instead it glanced off the crossbar.
  • Yimmi Chara and Larrys Mabiala also got chances to equalize for Portland before the hour mark. However, Chara’s attempted volley trickle went wide, whereas Mabiala’s a clean header off a corner kick also missed the target.
  • The Timbers were thus heading toward a frustrating 1-0 result, but miraculously won a penalty kick at death time. As second-half’s stoppage time ended, Club America had to concede a handball following a massive, chaotic scramble in the box. Felipe Mora took the penalty kick and equalized the game 1-1 at the death.
  • This shock goal near death time will ensure that the Timbers will head into Wednesday’s second leg on level terms.
