As the domestic season progresses to international football, here’s some Lionel Messi news – the Argentinian wants to win Copa America.
Argentina and Colombia were going to co-host Copa America this summer. However, after Colombia lost their hosting duties, Argentina shouldered the responsibility of hosting the whole tournament.
However, now, CONMEBOL have ruled against it due to rising COVID case rates.
So, as this tweet explains, both host countries are now a doubt for Copa America, itself in doubt without hosts.
Messi News – The Argentinian Wants to Win Copa America
If the tournament does play in spite of these safety concerns, though, Lionel Messi wants to win it.
Part of the present hosts’ national squad, Messi wants Argentina to win the Copa America trophy.
Lionel Messi won’t be happy with his summer’s work unless he lifts the Copa America at the end of it.
After all, Messi, in his playing career’s twilight years, is yet to win a senior international honour with Argentina.
And the 2021 Copa America may be one of the final chances for Lionel Messi, Barcelona forward, to do so.
Messi in His Own Words
“I’m very happy to be here with the boys,” Messi said in an interview with the media of the Argentinian Football Association (AFA).
“It’s a strange and different situation that we’re dealing with,” he said about training with Argentina’s national team.
“We can’t have a normal camp. We’re gradually getting together, working hard and preparing for the qualifying games.”
However, he went on to say, “I’m very excited and really hungry to do well.”
“In the last Copa America we left a good impression, but we can’t just be happy with that,” Messi said.
“We want to keep improving,” he added. “The last qualifiers we played were very good. Unfortunately, it’s been a long time and we couldn’t get together to play again [in the meantime].
“We have to try and kept our rhythm back as soon as possible and keep improving.”
“It’s always special to be with the national team. We want to win, that’s the goal,” he declared.
“The boys and the experienced ones are really up for it,” Messi elaborated.
“I think we have a very united group, with a very good core that has been worked on since [Lionel] Scaloni arrived, with the boys that he’s brought in.
“We’ve got a very good group and that’s the important thing. It’s got to be a very strong group for the challenges that await us.”
