Joan Laporta, the club’s newly elected president, has confirmed that he wants Lionel Messi to stay in Barcelona.
Speaking after his presidential victory, Laporta said: “Leo loves Barcelona. That’s the reflection of it. The best player in the world loves Barcelona. Hopefully, that will help him to stay in Barcelona. That’s what we want.”
“Today marks 20 years since a boy named Leo Messi debuted with Barcelona’s Infantil B [U12-13] team,” he said. “Seeing the best player in the world come to vote with his son is an example of what we’ve said.”
Laporta’s come back to Camp Nou eleven years after his previous stint.
He was announced on Sunday when he obtained 58.3 per cent of the vote, defeating Victor Font and Toni Freixa.
Meanwhile, Messi’s career at Barcelona is a hot subject of discussion now that his deal is up in less than three months.
And Laporta has said that he would do everything in his power to keep the forward on the team, which he repeated late on Sunday.
