Real Madrid playmaker James Rodriguez just wants to join Atletico de Madrid instead of having to move to either England or Italy.
That is according to a report Onda Cero, via El Mundo Deportivo, which adds that the player’s agent Jorge Mendes has already spoken to Atletico CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín about the deal – which was initially explored last summer.
The contract for the Colombia midfielder expires in 2021 and a report in Diario AS last month claimed that Manchester United, Everton, Juventus and Napoli were all interested among the clubs.
The biggest stumbling block to any deal, however, is the current wage package of €8.5 m per year for the player – which Atletico might not be able to match, it is reported.
After a two-year loan deal at Bayern Munich, the former Porto playmaker returned to Los Blancos last Summer. James netted 15 goals and provided 20 assists in 67 games for the Bavarian club between 2017 and 2019.
James has just started four La Liga games this season for the club and hasn’t been featured in a single minute of league action since Real Mallorca’s 1-0 loss in October.
