East Bengal’s Foreign Players Will Leave

East Bengal’s Foreign Players Will Leave

In a double blow for the Indian Super League (ISL) side, East Bengal’s foreign players will leave. With Matti Steinmann already confirming his exit, Bright Enobakhare is unlikely to extend his stay now, too.

East Bengal’s talismanic German midfielder Matti Steinmann has mutually terminated his contract and has left the club, Goal have confirmed.

In ESL’s last season, Steinmann graced the Kolkata giants with four goals and three assists in 17 matches.

East Bengal’s Foreign Players Will Leave

Steinmann had signed a two-year contract with the Red and Golds last season.

He is leaving the club due to the ongoing tussle between the club officials and investors Shree Cement Limited.

These conflicts have arisen over the signing of the final agreement. Indeed, Shree Cement have decided not to invest any further in East Bengal, unless the club signs the final agreement.

The timing of Steinmann’s departure is unfortunate, as he would have received a salary hike in the second season had he stayed.

Nonetheless, he has decided to end his association with the club after just one season.

Previously, according to Goal, the German was in talks with his former club in the A-League Wellington Phoenix. So, Steinmann was preparing to leave the club anyway.

Enobakhare Out, As Well

Hearing these reasons for an opt-out is strange, because we’d expect foreign nationals to leave the state due to coronavirus.

India is currently suffering through a devastating second wave of coronavirus cases. Even the Indian Premier League (IPL) is in danger after five cricketers tested positive for the virus.

Two KKR and three CSK players were infected despite IPL’s strict bio-bubbles for all teams, implying these bubbles may be futile against the new strain.

Seeing his predicament, it’d be logical to assume that foreign players involved in all Indian sports may be leaving their teams, and the country too, to avoid the virus.

But this is not the reason for the two foreign members of East Bengal leaving soon.

Along with Steinmann, another fan favourite and star player Bright Enobakhare is also on the verge of leaving.

The Nigerian attacker had joined the Red and Golds in the January transfer window on a short-term deal. And he was eager to extend his stay with the club for the upcoming season.

But, due to the same uncertainty that caused Steinmann’s exit, Enobakhare is also on his way out of the club.
