FC Porto have defeated Chelsea 0-1 in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals. This means that Chelsea lose to Porto but advance anyway to the semifinals. How?
The entire 90 minutes of the match yesterday remained a scoreless draw. It was in the injury time, at the 90+3’ minute’s mark, that the singular goal of the game was scored.
Nanu’s pass from the right end met Mehdi Taremi. Taremi sent an overhead kick flying into the net and scored a late goal for Porto’s victory. But was it a victory?
It only reimbursed half of Porto’s deficit from the first leg against Chelsea. And so, Porto did not advance on to the semifinals.
Chelsea lose to Porto but advance anyway:
Chelsea had defeated Porto 2-0 in the first leg of the quarter-finals. And the winner of the aggregate of the two matches (two legs) gets to advance in the Champions League.
So, after playing and losing leg 2 of 2, Chelsea still hold the aggregate tally of 2-1 against Porto.
This is why, despite the Blues losing, they advance into the semifinals and not Porto.
They will play in the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in seven years.
This is also Chelsea’s 8th time in the Champions League semifinals, the most for any English side ever:
