Chelsea improved their chances of qualifying for the Champions League, by finishing in the top four, with a 2-1 win.
They won a crucial match, the penultimate game of both teams’ Premier League seasons, over Leicester City.
Antonio Rudiger and Jorginho’s one goal each secured the victory.
Chelsea Avenged Leicester City
The First Half
Chelsea made a good start to the game, clearly desperate to make amends for their Wembley loss to Leicester.
Timo Werner was at the centre of it all, denying what appeared to be a definite penalty after being kicked by Youri Tielemans. However, referees chalked off his cool finish because it was offside.
Luck was not siding with the striker last night, because Wener had another goal disallowed. He shot shortly a simple header after the half-hour mark but VAR perceived that he handled the ball.
Chelsea finished the first half goalless, and also lost N’Golo Kante to injury, despite dominating possession.
The Second Half
However, Rudiger scored their opening just 94 seconds into the second half to set things right. He scored from a flicked-on corner to the delight of a partisan crowd.
Werner’s luck changed soon after, with the Blues forward luring Wesley Fofana into tripping him in the 64th minute. VAR inspection upgraded the punishment from a free-kick to a penalty.
Jorginho scored from the penalty spot to pull Chelsea up 2-0.
However, Kelechi Iheanacho still had time to set up a tense end with a left-footed goal, finishing from inside the net.
Still, Ayoze Perez missed a major chance to equalize, and Chelsea kept their top-four hopes alive, as we predicted.
