Maradona Tribute in Copa America

CONMEBOL offered a tribute to the late legend Diego Maradona. CONMEBOL, who are the governing body for football in South America, arranged for a Maradona tribute in Copa America.

Ahead of Argentina’s opening match in Copa America against Chile, CONMEBOL put on a stunning display in honour of Maradona.

This is after Argentina captain Lionel Messi and the rest of the national team also paid a tribute to their legendary countryman.

How Did Maradona Pass Away?

Argentinian legend Maradona passed away at the age of 60 on November 26, 2020 after he suffered a heart attack.

The former footballer and Argentina coach had been hospitalised at the start of November.

This was only some days after celebrating his landmark 60th birthday, and because he complained of low spirits and fatigue.

His tests revealed a blood clot on the brain, which doctors operated on successfully, as they later revealed.

Maradona subsequently got a release from hospital so as to continue his convalescence as an outpatient.

He was then dwelling in a private neighbourhood near Tigre, northern Buenos Aires.

However, just a few days later, he suffered cardiac arrest and paramedics at the scene failed to revive him.

In the months after his death, seven of the caretakers for Maradona, in his final days, are facing manslaughter charges.

Maradona Tribute in Copa America

At Estadio Nilton Santos Stadium, along with light shows, a holographic video in appreciation of Maradona begun the Copa America.

As part of the video, a holographic image of Maradona appeared at the stadium with him doing kick-ups.

Also getting a feature was the memorable goal against England. That became the goal of the century, where he bamboozled past several defenders in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

The tribute then ended with Maradona balancing the ball on his head with ‘1960 to infinity’ written above.
