Ronald Koeman was on the verge of leaving Barcelona. But he has since turned things around and a new contract appears to be on the horizon (the football news). And amidst his search for a midfielder in football today, says Koeman – ‘thanks to me, Barcelona have a future’.
Ronald Koeman insists that his efforts were critical in saving Barcelona. Though their current La Liga schedule is in the air at the moment, last season, the Catalan club finished third.
In the domestic top flight, they finished seven points behind the 2020-21 Spanish champions Atletico Madrid. Furthermore, they exited the Champions League in the last-16 stage to Paris Saint-Germain.
In August, Barcelona’s problems were at their height amid financial difficulties and complications with La Liga.
While several players took forced pay cuts to allow new signings’ registration, Lionel Messi left on a free football transfer.
Koeman: Thanks to Me, Barcelona Have a Future
Through these ongoing hardships, Barcelona head coach Ronald Koeman has experienced a seemingly strained relationship with club president Joan Laporta.
The latter conducted an unsuccessful managerial replacement search in June and, more recently, set conditions and targets on Koeman’s extension.
And as such, Dutchman Ronald Koeman does now admit that his relationship with Laporta has yet to fully recover.
“It has improved a bit [the relationship with Laporta],” Koeman told NOS.
“But when you let things blow a bit as a club and are not clear about the future of a coach, then you get speculation.
“And if you are the one who is the coach, then that is not a nice case.
“Last week there was also something in the media, which I think was not right. That again suggests that the trainer does not have full power.
“He said a little too much. That can be done in private. I like it when a president is committed and also asks questions. Only that it should not be in the press, that was the problem.
“Laporta was not wise on two occasions, let me put it this way. We are also in contact about a new contract now.”
So, despite it all, Koeman is enjoying his time at Camp Nou as he prepares for a potential new contract.
“Thanks to me, this club has a future,” he said, finally. “I see a lot of potential. I am open to [staying] here, I am enjoying myself here.”
