After the 37th round of the EPL, Liverpool climbed to fourth place on the table by winning over Burnley. And per Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp, about winning 3-0 over Burnley, ‘it was a semi-final’.
BBC quote Klopp, about winning 3-0 over Burnley: “It was a semi-final.”
“We had to win it and we did,” the coach said. “We made a serious improvement and went into the final, although nothing has been decided yet.”
He then said: “We deserved it by playing a great match.”
Klopp Discusses Match Details
“Burnley shouldn’t be given a chance to score, we knew it was going to be very difficult,” he said, about one of the final matches on this season.
“They had three and a half thousand fans on their side – and the atmosphere in football is very important. But I think the lads coped with that problem perfectly. There were no distractions.”
“We certainly need to recover quickly,” he added. “There is not much choice at some positions. We need to wrap up the remaining players in cotton wool.”
“We are not guaranteed anything in the last match. Crystal Palace is a tough opponent,” he finished, however.
Indeed, he also discussed the match, and his players’ spectacular performance in it, to Liverpool’s official website.
Though Burnley put up a good fight with several skilled attacking plays, Liverpool amassed three goals to none against them.
Roberto Firmino ran brilliantly into the penalty area and gave Liverpool the lead with a flat shot at 43 minutes.
Nathaniel Phillips then doubled the Reds’ lead nine minutes later. In the 52nd minute later, Phillips leapt into the air and scored the second goal with a powerful head strike.
Finally, one minute before death time, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also scored with a flat shot. He gave Liverpool the third and final goal after first playing from a corner kick.
So, Liverpool won, just as we foretold they would.
“Really good, really mature performance with not a world-class start… but after around 15 minutes we found our feet back and then we played really good football,” Klopp said.
“[We] scored a wonderful goal,” he then talked about the goals. “Second goal from Nat, outstanding skill from Sadio, nice little chip and great, great header. And the third goal, Oxlade at his best.”
Klopp also stated how pleased he was with Nat Phillips: “Very pleased, very pleased. I love the boy, he knows that.”
He even went so far as to say: “Just let’s finish this season and then if you want I write a book about both boys – about Nat and about Rhys, it’s no problem.”
