Indian Football Players Record Their First Goal against Brazil

Though India eventually lost 1-6 in its first match of the four-nation international tournament on Friday, it wasn’t all bad. After all, last night saw Indian football players record their first goal against Brazil, and a woman reached this milestone.

The Indian women’s football team scored one goal and kept mighty Brazil at bay till late in the first half. But despite this hopeful 1-2, in the second half, the Indian national women’s team conceded five more goals to Brazil.

Manisha Kalyan equalised in the eighth minute for India after Debora Oliveira’s initial goal for Brazil. This opening goal put the 2007 World Cup runners-up in the lead in the very first minute of the match.

Still, Manisha Kalyan’s equalizing goal made for a historic moment for India. After all, it was the first time an Indian footballer, regardless of gender, had scored against a senior Brazil team.

Anyway, later, Giovana Costa put Brazil in the lead again in the 36th minute. This give the home side the advantage at the breather, that is the half-time break.

Brazil then pumped in four more goals in the second half to win the match with a tennis-like scoreline. And the four second-half scorers were Ariadina Borges (52nd), Kerolin Ferraz (54th), Geyse Ferreira (76th) and Ariadina Borges (81st).

The match marked the international retirement of legendary mid-fielder Formiga at 43 year of age. She has been playing for 26 years and has documented 205 games for Brazil. Furthermore, she featured in seven Olympics and as many World Cups.

She was a part of the 2007 World Cup silver medal winning Brazil team. She came as a substitute with barely 15 minutes left in Friday’s match at Arena da Amazonia.

Now, India will next play Chile (November 29) and Venezuela (December 2).
