Football Today – Putellas from Barcelona Has Won the Ballon d’Or – but Why?
The 27-year-old has been rewarded with the most prestigious individual award in the game – the French honour of Ballon d’Or.
Spaniard Alexia Putellas has been a mainstay in the Barca team since joining the club from Levante back in 2012. She has racked up over 350 appearances across all competitions.
Furthermore, the 2020-21 campaign was arguably her best yet, as she led Barcelona’s successful charge, which won them a treble.
Barca stormed to victory as they won trophies for the Primera Iberdrola, Copa de la Reina and Women’s Champions League.
And through all these three campaigns last season, Putellas recorded a staggering statistic of 37 goals and 27 assists.
In fact, three, very crucial, of the Spanish midfielder’s overall goals last season came in finals. This included a goal via a penalty in the team’s 4-0 Champions League triumph over Chelsea.
In addition to her exploits at club level, finally, Putellas also became the most capped player in the history of the Spanish women’s national team earlier this year, when she went two ahead of Marta Torrejon with 92 caps.
