Football Today – Pique Buys Ligue 1 Rights in Spain

According to ESPN, Barcelona defender, Gerard Pique’s company Kosmos Holding has purchased the rights to Ligue 1 in Spain. Kosmos, for whom Pique is president, has allegedly bought Spain’s Ligue 1 rights for the next three years. After the football news of him once trying to buy a stake in Barcelona Corporate recently went public, in news of football today, Pique buys the Ligue 1 rights in Spain, following Lionel Messi’s move to Paris Saint-Germain in the French top-flight.

Pique’s company Kosmos did not succeed in their bid to acquire 49 per cent of Barca Corporate.

It’s a subsidiary business at the Catalan club that houses the Barca Academy project. Besides the academy, it also includes the Barca Innovation Hub, the Barca Licensing and Merchandising (BLM), and the Barca Studios.

But the club’s statutes prohibited Pique from owning a stake in the business because he was a league player. He is an existing player at Barcelona, and that accounts for legal conflict of interest.

In the summer, however, Kosmos did purchase the rights to the Copa America final.

Captain Lionel Messi’s Argentina won over Brazil, for whom plays Neymar (his teammate at Paris in Ligue 1 now).

In that final, therefore, Messi won his first senior trophy in international football, and Llanos’ Twitch channel streamed it live.

Additionally, the Kosmos company recently acquired the rights to Italy’s Serie B in Spain and several other countries.

In recent years, furthermore, Pique has revamped coverage of the Davis Cup tennis competition through Kosmos.

Finally, Gerard Pique also owns Andorra, a football club that competes in Spain’s third division.

Ligue 1 Rights…and Who Has Them

Twitch will broadcast Messi’s potential debut live on this Sunday when PSG travels to Reims.

In Spain, Ibai Llanos’s channel will broadcast the match, with the channel being a Spanish streamer and esports commentator.

Telecinco, a Spanish television channel, has also paid for the right to broadcast the PSG game this weekend.

ESPN claim according to sources, Movistar previously held the rights to French football in Spain in a deal worth “less than €2.5 million” per year.

But this case of poor timing, they refused to renew the rights this season just before Messi’s move to France.

And now Spanish Barcelona star Gerard Pique, or rather his company Kosmos Holding, has also bought the rights in Spain.

Kosmos, which purchased the rights to the French Ligue 1, in collaboration with Enjoy TV, intends to sub-license them.

They will likely let a television channel or an OTT borrow these Ligue 1 rights in Spain in the future.

Messi has yet to play for PSG since joining on a free transfer from Barcelona earlier this month.

However, after two weeks of training with his new teammates, he may be making his debut against Reims this weekend.
