Euro 2020 – Italy Won a Historic 0-3 Victory over Turkey

In Group A, and in the very first match opening Euro 2020, Italy won a historic 0-3 victory over Turkey.

Turkey had little to offer as Italy began Euro 2020 with a triumph, as we predicted.

They’ve scored three goals in a single Euros game for the first time.

Here are some more football updates for Italy, and you can track our prediction of Turkey’s trajectory otherwise, over here.

Euro 2020 – Italy Won a Historic 0-3 Victory over Turkey

Italy did not qualify for the 2018 World Cup, but they have since rebuilt under Roberto Mancini.

And on Friday, the Azzurri finally made a dominant return to big tournament football. They beat Turkey 3-0 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome to kick off Euro 2020.

The coach thus appears to have turned them into a credible power that handled one of the competition’s alleged dark horses with remarkable ease.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though. Andrea Bocelli’s pre-match version of ‘Nessun Dorma,’ translating to ‘let no one sleep,’ was useless during a drab first half.

But one flashpoint shortly before the break saw Italy reject a penalty.

However, in the second half, Mancini’s team eventually took the lead.

Shortly after halftime, Turkey’s Juventus defender Merih Demiral scored an own goal.

The following strikes from Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne were perhaps unnecessary considering that Turkey failed to pose any danger.

According to Stats Perform’s Playing Styles model, Turkey relied on counter-attacks 26% more than the average in qualifying. Even their deep set-up contributed to a cagey start.

But Italy began to probe more intently, with Insigne shooting just after a one-two with Immobile in the 17th minute.

Then captain Giorgio Chiellini, also the Azzurri’s oldest outfielder, drew a fantastic save from Ugurcan Cakir with a strong header.

Turkey was then fortunate not to concede a penalty right before half-time. VAR rules that though Zeki Celik touched Leonardo Spinazzola’s cross, it was without making a clear error.

Despite the introduction of Cengiz Under after halftime, Turkey’s strategy remained the same.

So Italy rightfully took the lead in the 53rd minute when Domenico Berardi left Umut Meras on his backside. He rhammered the ball across goal, which Demiral somehow diverted into his own net.

Then, just past the hour, Cakir was unable to hold on to Spinazzola’s shot. And Immobile was on there to coolly tap in the rebound to make it 2-0.

And Insigne completed the scoring 11 minutes from time, looping home after being set up by Immobile.

So, the Azzurri became the first team in European Championship finals history to score three goals in a single game.
