Having reviewed Bundesliga league holders Germany already, it’s time for the next Euro 2020 Group F Team Preview – Portugal.
With the defending champions having a stronger team than in 2016, here’s a favourable review of the Euro 2020 title-defenders.
Qualification was a concern for these champions, though. They finished second in their group, three points behind third-placed Serbia, and failed to maintain their Nations League crown.
There, they fell short of France, whom they will meet again in this group, Group F.
Euro 2020 Group F Team Preview – Portugal
Despite their abundance of attacking talent, coach Fernando Santos prefers a strong, cautious style.
This approach has paid dividends as Santos led Portugal to their first trophy five years ago. So, it’s unlikely to change, especially given their group.
Their strategy may thus not switch this summer and they’ll be optimistic about their chances once more.
Meanwhile, their players have performed admirably in their respective domestic leagues.
In England, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Diogo Jota, and Dias have all done well.
And of course, despite playing for a sluggish Juventus side, Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo continues to improve.
As for their depth options, André Silva (Eintracht Frankfurt) and Joo Palhinha (Sporting), have had outstanding seasons.
Finally, Dias will be partnered at the back by 38-year-old Pepe, who may be playing his final international event.
They’ll be attempting to become only the second team after Iberian rivals Spain to regain the European Championships. And why not – it’s a realistic goal.
The semi-finals, on the other hand, appear to be more likely for Portugal.
